Students buy a PC, get a free Xbox 360 from Microsoft

Starting May 20, Microsoft will offer students purchasing a PC of $699 or more a free 4GB Xbox 360, presumably to aid in their studies.

Microsoft offered a similar deal last summer, and apparently it was successful enough to warrant a return.

With Windows 8 just around the corner, it may seem wise to wait to buy a new PC, but a free $200 gaming console is a particularly delicious carrot to dangle in front of college-aged teens and adults.

The deal won’t be limited to the U.S., as Canadian students will be able to nab a free 4GB Xbox 360 as well with the purchase of a PC at $599 and up starting May 18.

Participating U.S. retailers include Best Buy, Dell.com, Fry’s Electronics, HPDirect.com, Microsoft Stores, and NewEgg.com. Canadians can head to Best Buy, Dell.ca, Future Shop, Staples and The Source.

End dates for the promotion vary by retailer, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to TechRadar.

Students are important to Microsoft

Despite the well-known popularity of Apple’s Mac computers with college students, the demographic is important to Microsoft, Microsoft’s spokesperson told TechRadar in an email.

"Supporting students and education has always been important to Microsoft and each year we create student offers to make technology affordable and accessible," the spokesperson said.

"Every year during back to school season, millions of college students choose Windows PCs because they want technology that allows them to manage their school work and personal life with ease."

"With all the hard work students put in for their classes in college, they need some downtime, right?" reads a post on the Windows Team Blog.

Will Sony offer a similar deal?

Logically it seems Sony is in a position to benefit equally from a similar promotion, but it’s unknown at this time whether the company plans to offer students any special deals for the summer.

Giving away a PS3 with a Sony laptop could provide the same draw as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 offer.

But a Sony spokesperson told TechRadar that the company has nothing to announce at this time.

Pyramid Solitaire Saga: King.com’s answer to Solitaire Blitz on Facebook

Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed a few trends come and go in the world of Facebook gaming. Just a few years ago, most major developers had tried their proverbial hand at a city-building or farming game, but now, the trends have shifted more towards arcade style casino and card games. In terms of card games, one style in particular has found a following on Facebook – pyramid solitaire (look at Solitaire Blitz, for example). King.com carries on in this new tradition with the launch of Pyramid Solitaire Saga on Facebook.

Pyramid Solitaire Saga (phew, say that five times fast) takes place in and around the pyramids of Egypt, with each level giving you a set of cards to clear from your stone tablet. For those unfamiliar with pyramid solitaire, you’ll have one active card at the bottom of the screen, and must then clear the cards above by clicking on cards one number lower or higher than that active card. That is, if a 3 is the active card, you could then click on either a 2 or a 4 to begin a run.

The ultimate goal in each level of Pyramid Solitaire Saga is to clear enough cards to uncover the golden scarabs, which normally rest underneath larger piles of cards. It’s not necessary to clear 100% of the cards in each level to achieve this, but you’ll probably get pretty close each time. You’ll have five lives at your disposal, but will only actually lose those lives if you fail to reach the level’s target score or run out of cards to pull from your deck before uncovering the golden scarabs.

Points are earned by clearing multiple cards in a chain before needing to draw from the pile once again, but as with most games of this type, your ultimate success will depend more on luck than skill. So long as you’re observant and exhaust all options before drawing your next card, the rest really isn’t even up to you. Luckily, gameplay is made more enjoyable with some seemingly small design touches, like the ability to press the space bar to draw a card, allowing your mouse to never leave the top area of the screen. Furthermore, the golden scarab cards are clearly marked with golden borders, so you won’t accidentally click on useless cards when simply trying to uncover them.

Rounding out the package is the ability to view your scores on each individual level alongside those of your friends on the in-game leaderboards, and the boosts feature that serves to change your game in some way (say, by adding additional cards to your deck). It would have been nice to see an “undo” button available in each level, in case you happen to draw a new card too early, but otherwise, Pyramid Solitaire Saga works well and is an entertaining (albeit slow-paced) take on the growing pyramid solitaire genre on Facebook.

Valve’s remote Steam download feature leaves beta, gets official

Now you can download games on Steam no matter where you are so that they’re ready and raring to play when you get home, as Valve’s remote Steam download service has left beta.

You’ll have to leave Steam running on your PC or Mac while you’re elsewhere to allow you to log in to Steam either online or via mobile and set downloads running but you probably do that anyway, right?

You bring the body, I’ll bring the steam

This will be handy for when new games are released while you’re out and about – no more hanging around gnashing your teeth while the download bar steadily inches towards completion when you get home.

To get your games downloading from afar, you just have to log in and go to the Games list on the Steam Community site from the app or another web browser.

As well as letting you set a download going, the remote service will keep you clued in to the status of your library and any current downloads too. Nifty.

Sadly there’s still no word from Valve on the hardware front – but we’re still kind of half expecting to hear something about that after a suspicious job posting emerged last month.

Cloud gaming: fast to play, faster to start

The GeForce Grid that’s powered by Nvidia’s new Kepler GPU is powerful enough to let you play the latest games on a TV – without a console – or to use professional compositing software from a tablet.

Does that mean you’ll never need to buy a graphics card again? Not quite, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang told TechRadar.

"There are still power users that require so much performance; because their work requires them to have dedicated capabilities I have every confidence that they’ll continue needing GPUs. It’s not likely they’ll want to share!

"When you’re designing a car when you’re sitting at your desk, the idea of sharing your computer with someone is completely ridiculous, because time is money and you want to get that car designed. However once that car is designed and they need to show that to clients or to an ad agency so they can create a great commercial, in that case it totally makes sense to access that same data set (through the cloud)."

"You’re still going to have your primary computing devices; this makes your primary computing device more convenient. You can now access whatever design, whatever data, whatever application that you want on enterprise desktops remotely and on mobile in a mobile way."

You’ll still need your PC

Even with a cloud of GPUs behind it, a tablet won’t be all you need all the time, and you’ll actually use your PC more often. "All of us will have a primary computing device and all of us will have a remoting app like Citrix on all of our computing devices. So I’ll have Citrix Receiver on my phone and on my tablet and on my thin and light notebook. I have three receivers remoting into my computer."

For accessing games on GeForce Grid game clouds like Gaikai, you don’t even need a tablet; just a network connection and an H.264 decoder. "The green cable is your came console," explains Huang (pointing at the Ethernet cable running into the back of a TV screen). What else do you need?

"A pretty normal H.264 decoder on just about any mobile device. H.264 is quite universal. Anything that has what you need to decode YouTube – and at this point pretty much every device in the world can decode YouTube – you should be able to use GeForce Grid.

"Of course the faster your decoder is, the smaller the latency becomes. So it is possible to build a better device to receive GeForce Grid but almost every single device can do it; cable set-top box, iPhones, any Android device, PC, Mac…"

But can any device you play a game on really give you the performance gamers are used to from console games? Are GeForce Grid games going to be good for more than casual gaming? How has Nvidia managed to get games in the cloud to be fast enough to avoid latency and lag?

Huang says consoles aren’t that hard to keep up with, actually, especially with the new GPU. "Whereas most consoles are now some six or seven years old, when a new game comes out it pushes that console right to the limit. There’s no horsepower left and so as a result the visual quality and the performance is balanced so delicately that it gets you just enough frame rate but with the most realism they can squeeze in so the game feels as fresh as possible.

"However that same game running on our state of the art Kepler could run 60hz easily; so the frame time goes from 30 or 60 milliseconds down to 16 milliseconds."

Fast response time

The response time of the game cloud will be just five milliseconds, he says; and the GPU is now much more efficient than the one in your console. "Where we used to render into a frame buffer and that frame buffer was then copied back into the CPU for decoding and compression and streaming, our GPU now renders and when it’s done rendering it’s already streaming out right out of the GPU, so it saves a whole bunch of encoding time not to mention copy time.

"So between rendering things faster, compressing and streaming in parallel we’ve taken a couple of 100ms lag and reduced it down to something that’s effectively the same performance and the same snappiness as a game console."

Games have to play fast enough for people to even consider cloud gaming, but once they do there are a lot of other advantages, Huang points out. "The benefit of cloud computing is convenience; it is the most convenient computing model we have ever known. It’s wonderful that one day I have all my music on my Android and it’s up in the cloud and the next day I buy a new Android device, I turn on my tablet and all my music shows up. All my photos show up. It is the most convenient model.

"Wouldn’t it be great if you could have games the same way? Today you have to download those applications and the biggest apps you can download on mobile devices are – games. And they’re larger and larger because the content is so rich; it’s arguably so rich that it’s hard for videogames to proliferate.

"As big as the gaming industry is, and growing still very fast, imagine how large it could be if you didn’t have to download five or ten gigabytes of application every time, if you didn’t have to wait eight or twelve hours for the download before you could enjoy it – you could literally click and you’re instantly in the game."

NomNom Combo on iPhone: If Triple Town were about the food chain…

Then what you’d get is East Side Games’ NomNom Combo on iPhone. Its first game for iOS devices, NomNom Combo draws plenty of inspiration from developer Spry Fox’s Triple Town, unabashedly so. In essence, it’s a free-to-play match-three puzzle game in which players don’t match like colored or shaped items to destroy them, but rather to create them.

The twist, however, is that players are granted a limited number of moves per game in NomNom Combo, meaning players will have to think hard about each move they take. NomNom separates units into two types: Predators and Prey. Of course, each can be matched up in threes to discover new species in each type, which is exactly the point. However, the critical thinking part comes in when positioning is a concern, or all of the time.

To break it down even further, here’s how the play hook works: On the Prey side, up to three adjacent green flies create one yellow mouse, while on the Predator side up to three green frogs create one yellow snake. Three yellow mice clumped together make one orange rabbit, and so on. Now, if a player happens to place a green fly near a green frog, that fly will flee to the opposite side of the game board, if it can. If not, then it gets eaten.

Players are rewarded with points for this, but having a unit bite the dust is rarely a good thing–it’s largely a wasted move. This is especially when you consider that, whenever players match to discover a new species, they’ll earn a shot at more moves via a wheel of chance that appears. To make sure this happens on cue, players can purchase the units they might need with coins they earn from successful matches, or as NomNom calls them, combos. (Hence the name.)

East Side has layered quests on top of all of that to add yet another motivator to how players engage with NomNom. However, you probably shouldn’t bother focusing on these, regardless of the coin rewards they offer. Honestly, they just serve to muddy up the game you’re currently playing, and aren’t exactly elegantly presented. Consider them an added bonus, really.

NomNom Combo offers an interesting twist on what Triple Town started, and a funny one at that. From the goofy faces on all of the game’s various animals to the sound that the Prey critters make when a Predator is about to step foot onto the game board, NomNom will draw chuckles out of some if not smiles out of others.

And that’s what East Side Games seems to be about at its core: making games that aren’t just fun, but funny. But does NomNom Combo add the “plus one” that company CEO Jason Bailey claims is crucial in drawing inspiration from an existing game? Well, turning Spry Fox’s match-three creation gameplay into a dichotomy of predators versus prey certainly sets NomNom apart. However, there’s only one way to find out whether that affects your opinion on the issue of copycatting.

Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers Galapagos Islands: Our guide to finding every item

And here we are, adventurers: we’ve reached the final scene of the Islands chapter in Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers, which also means we’ve reaches the final scene currently available in the entire game! This final scene takes us to the Galapagos Islands, to a location filled with rocks and mountains, making things a rather dull affair in terms of color. Luckily, the difficulty is rather light in this scene, as we’ll be required to find items in bulk (six Crabs, three birds and three iguanas), rather than finding 12 individual items each time.

CastleVille: Watch your puppies play with new animated decorations

Arguably one of the best things about the release of puppies in CastleVille is simply watching your puppy play and wander around your Kingdom. Whether they’re barking at beasties or helping you harvest crops, the game’s furry friends are almost too cute to handle. Raising the cuteness factor even more, a new set of dog toys and kingdom decorations has launched in the store, with these items being “interactive.” That is, your puppy will play or otherwise interact with these objects in animations that have been created specifically for them.

There are only a few interactive items available as of this writing, with most being available only for Crowns:

Critter Bush – 5,000 coins
Dog Bowl – 22 Crowns
Dog House – 28 Crowns
Dog Pond – 22 Crowns
Topiary Puppy – 22 Crowns

If you’re looking to spend just coins, the Critter Bush is still a cute option, as you can click on it to see your puppy jump into the bush entirely, only to chase out a critter and then jump out after it.

Technically, a new “Dog Fence” also appears in this section of the store for 1,000 coins, and it is pictured above with a dog trying to jump over it. However, we’ve had little luck duplicating this animation in our own Kingdoms, so perhaps this was placed here in error. Either way, it’s a cute decorative option on its own, if you’d like to add a few pieces to your Kingdom (perhaps to surround your Kennel?).

With these new animations and Kingdom decorations, it’s become even clearer that pups are here to stay. Hopefully, kittens will join them sometime soon, and will receive as much follow-up content after their release.

Rovio could probably keep launching Angry Birds updates forever and live handsomely off the proceeds.

However, determined not to rely on the golden goose (pig) to keep laying (stealing) the eggs, the company has announced a successor.

The new title is called Amazing Alex, will launch in two-months time and will be based upon the Casey’s Contraption game, recently acquired by the Finnish developer.

Casey’s Contraption, which you can see in the video below, is another physics-based game for iOS. Think Cut the Rope, but designed by Kevin McCallister from the Home Alone movies.

According to Rovio CEO Mikael Hed, Alex is a ‘curious young boy who likes to build things’

The pressure is on

Hed told the Yle website that Rovio definitely feels the weight of expectation after Angry Birds’ unprecedented success.

"The quality pressure is high. We want to maintain the high standard Angry Birds fans have come to enjoy," he added.

Angry Birds recently racked-up it’s one billionth download.
