Nearly everyone has heard of Christopher Nolan’s Inception (2010) at this point, but I’m willing to bet that most of Facebook’s gaming audience were in the dark on Mind Crime, a Facebook advergame created by Escalation Studios to promote the film. It’s also one of the most ambitious and lovingly executed advergame projects I’ve seen since The Expendables: 8 Bit Game of last month.

Non-casual gamers have noted how Nolan’s movie feels very much like a video game, with its fantastically surreal visuals, carefully delineated rules, complex levels, and action sequences. Moreover, the relationship between Leonardo DiCaprio’s character and his wife reminds players of the Japanese survival horror game, Silent Hill 2. (Some even go as far to claim that the wife is a female Pyramid Head.) So it must come as quite the surprise to know that an Inception movie game was around since last spring, on Facebook the past month, and even on the Android phone, but there’s been no word of game plans set for any consoles or PC release.

You don’t need to know anything about the film to enjoy the game. What the game first does though, is put you in the role of the Architect, where you’ll design a maze from which a 3-D dream city will blossom (see YouTube clip here or above). You’re then dropped into the maze, where you must fight your way out, retrieve items or assets, and avoid the enemy projections. Easter eggs, such as posters, trailers, and production photos, are rewarded to persistent players.
You can get a tour of the action in this video from Nolan Fans. As you can see, it’s pretty sophisticated for a Facebook title, and totally not your usual point-and-click operation. Because of this, I highly recommend you read the game instructions.

Using Facebook, you can share your maze designs, play on mazes designed by other people, and participate in the high score leaderboard.
To play, access the game via its official website, or on the Facebook page.
NOTE: You’ll first need to have the Unity Web Player, a browser plug-in that’ll enable the game to run in 3-D. It’s a pretty simple deal though. Just click Install, Run, then Finish. Launching the game will make it ask you to download the plug-in, so it’s a no-brainer.
